ALC, conjunction with the Collaborative Design Group, provided master planning services to envision an incremental approach of village design for the Gold Hill Mesa Neighborhood. The site includes immense grading challenges whereas the inclusion of conventional big box retail, sprawling fields of parking and extremely tall retaining walls would be forced. An incremental design was provided combining retaining walls with parking fields beneath buildings and smaller building footprints. The focus was to create what was referred to as a high concentration of awesomeness, managing market expectations for what could be the main street for the village and its connection to the historic smoke stack, affectionately referred to as “the stack”. The design also included opportunities of utilizing the steep grade for the potential of an amphitheater and venue, the daylighting and celebration of rainwater, and commercial pad sites to build energy for the village street.
