Born in San Diego, Toby grew up in the cornfields of central Illinois. After studying drama, he moved to New York City and pursued a career as an actor but found himself increasing drawn to work that had a larger impact on the world around him. He worked in nonprofit grants administration, primarily at arts and public health foundations, and there discovered the field of landscape architecture. He graduated from Temple University in Philadelphia with a Master of Landscape Architecture degree. He is drawn to urban spaces that connect people with natural processes and to wild spaces that allow people in. More than simply beautiful spaces, he strives to create functional spaces that inspire visitors and invigorate natural systems.
In his free time, Toby enjoys birdwatching, cooking and eating, poetry, and exploring the numerous wild spaces in his new home state of Colorado.
